Instructions

Step 1: Prep The Ghost Mop Costume

We chose to make a witch ghost mop by adding a simple mini witch hat (found in the Dollar Tree floral section). Grab another costume or make your own mask from felt if you prefer.

To prep the miniature witch hat, I removed the pick and cut a hole in the bottom of the witch hat using scissors. It is made from lightweight material so this step is easy.

Step 2: Cut the Ghost Eyes

Take the felt or faux leather piece and fold it in half. The piece should measure approximately 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches. Use a pencil to draw a half-oval on the material.

Using your scissors, cut an oval shape from the folded faux leather. Trim it as needed to achieve the desired eye size.

If you want the eyes to match exactly, use one eye as a stencil for the other. Personally, I like mismatched eyes because they seem spookier!

TIP: You can also use craft foam, buttons, or foam balls for the ghost eyes.

Step 3: Make the Mop Ghost

Turn the mop head upside down, with the flat bottom facing upwards. This is the side that goes on top of the jar or vase.

If you’re using a different base and concerned it might show through the mop, grab a white or beige creepy cloth from Dollar Tree (or use cheesecloth) to cover the base of your mop ghost.

If you want the ghost to be securely attached, use hot glue to adhere the mop head to the mason jar lid. Then put the lid on the jar.

Step 3b: If you’d like to make your mop ghost light up, glue the tap light on the lid or place the battery operated string of wired fairy lights inside the jar before putting on the lid / mop.

Step 4: Attach the Witch Hat (or other costume)

Time to dress up this ghost! Apply hot glue to the bottom of the hat pick and press it firmly onto the mop head.

If there’s a bow on the hat pick, you can remove it and then hot glue it to the top of the hat, trimming the ends to your liking.

Step 5: Add the Eyes

Lastly, add hot glue to the backside of the faux leather eye pieces and press them firmly onto the front of the mop head.

Variations for Your Dollar Tree Ghost Mop

One of the most exciting aspects of this Halloween craft is its versatility. Here are some ideas to help you customize your Dollar Tree Ghost Mop:

Add Glitter

To give your ghost mop a touch of sparkle, consider applying glitter to the faux leather eyes or the mop head. A bit of glitter can enhance the eerie charm of your ghostly decoration. Use glitter glue or glitter paint for less mess.

Paint It

Instead of using an all-white mop head, you can experiment with different paint colors to create ghosts with unique personalities. Black or green paint can give your ghost mop a spooky twist, while pastel colors can make it a bit more whimsical. Glow in the dark paint would be extra spooky!

Common Questions About Dollar Tree Ghost Mop

To provide you with some insight into the most common questions people have about this Dollar Tree Halloween craft, let’s address a few of them:

Can I use a different type of mop head?

You can certainly experiment with different types of mop heads, but the all-white ones from Dollar Tree are a great choice because they resemble traditional ghosts. Other mop heads may work, but the final look might be different.

You can use a non-woven mop head for a different look than the cotton rope mop head. For a larger ghost, try a cheap mop head from Walmart or Target or this inexpensive jumbo mop head from Amazon.

Where can I find the Dollar Tree Witch Hat pick?

Dollar Tree typically carries these witch hat picks in the floral section of the store, especially during the Halloween season. If you can’t find them, consider checking with store associates for assistance. You can also order an entire case online if you’re making a bunch of witch ghost mops!

Can I make these with kids?

Absolutely! This is a kid-friendly craft, but adult supervision is recommended when using hot glue. It’s a fun project for children to unleash their creativity and get into the Halloween spirit.

What other Dollar Tree Halloween decorations should I buy to go with my mop ghost?

Whether you’re decorating a mantel or a party table or your front porch, Dollar Tree has so many great options! Here are our favorite dollar store Halloween decorations:

  • Plastic skeletons – grab them in multiple sizes to make this cute craft, or the smallest ones are perfect for hanging in creepy cloth or spiderweb.
  • Light-up ghost lamp (and give it some Disney magic)
  • Foam pumpkin – these don’t look great on their own, but with some paint, fabric (like creepy cloth) and a new stem, you can create a garden of fun Halloween pumpkins
  • Plastic skulls – scatter them around a mantel or refreshment table (or hang some in the spider webs!)
  • White candles – why are a bunch of candles on tall candlesticks great for Halloween? I don’t know but I love it. Glue black eyes on to make them into ghost candles.
  • Jars – make your own apothecary jars using mason jars or recycled jars. Just glue a bead on top for a handle. Then fill the jars with plastic spiders, creepy plastic eyeballs, spider webs, or whatever else you can find.
  • Picture frame – use some black spray paint to create ghostly Halloween frames, then print these free vintage medical images for a perfect Halloween gallery wall (or these vintage Halloween images if you prefer cute to creepy)
