Is my natural hair growing? It is a question that keeps many of us pondering throughout our natural hair journey. Since natural hair is kin to shrinkage we often desire to grow our hair beyond a certain point to enjoy the same length to when our hair is blown out. If you have just done a big chop or are newly transitioning you may even be more edgy about your hair growth journey. While you are adjusting to your short style, you can’t wait to have a full mane again. Regular length checks and journal entries become part of your weekly routine.
Although long natural hair can be #goals, the most important thing is that your natural hair is healthy. If you take good care of your tresses, your hair will grow. One thing to note though is that the maximum length of your hair is often closely related to genetics, so that is a good thing to keep in mind. However, this has not stopped many women to flock towards the African staple Virgin Hair Fertilizer!
Is it actually worth it though? Five natural women with different hair textures tested the Virgin Hair Fertilizer for five whole weeks and weighed in on the discussion. However, before we get into that, let’s first shed more light on what this product actually is and claims to do.
What is Virgin Hair Fertilizer?
Hair Virgin Fertilizer is a greasy ointment for your scalp that helps stimulate hair growth by opening up your follicles and getting your blood flow going. In the tube you will find a thick jelly that is reminiscent of vaseline. It has a really strong smell of peppermint oil, menthol and other herbs.
The use of peppermint oil is perhaps no surprise as the benefits of peppermint oil have been widely lauded. It contains plenty of nutrients and minerals that have antiseptic properties, which help to clean and moisturize the scalp and at the same time promote hair growth.
How do you use it?
You are supposed to take a dime size amount of the grease and massage into your scalp for a few minutes. You can do this every day or a few times a week, depending on the time you have available and your preference.
Virgin Hair Fertilizer Reviews
Now let’s get into some real life experiences with the Virgin Hair Fertilizer. We asked Lily, Halima, Sara, Rianna and Monica to test this African cult product for several weeks. Did they see any hair growth after they used it? Below they share their experiences.
3B Hair Texture, Lily Bullach, The Tester
I wanted to know what all the fuss was about so I started using Virgin Hair Fertilizer about a month ago. I have 3b curly hair up to my shoulders. My hair has always been around that length and I was eager to see if this ointment was going to pump the gas on my growth.

I have been using the Virgin Hair Fertilizer daily. I use a little bit of the product every morning and massage it into my scalp before I go on and style my natural hair for the day. I can say it has been pretty good to my scalp. My scalp is less dry. In the beginning I felt a strong tingling sensation that I could not really get comfortable with. I started mixing it with JBCO and now I use it every morning without any reservations.
The one thing I would say is that it does increase the build up on my scalp by a lot. Where I would normally wash my hair once a week with a clarifying shampoo, I now need to wash it twice a week, if I want to wear my hair out.
So now for the length check!!! Did the Virgin Hair Fertilizer actually grow my hair out? I could not see much difference in terms of growth to be honest. What I did notice is that my hair has become much thicker, which I like. I am going to continue to use it for another few weeks to see if my hair actually grows out more.

So I had never heard of this product before. Since the name contains the word fertilizer I was equally scared and had high expectations of this cream. I mean how fertile can it really be? I have really dry, coily hair that shrinks up to my neck, thus I was eager to find out what this potion could do for me and my coils.
I like the packaging it comes in, it has a bit of a retro feel. The end of the tube is folded so you can really squeeze the last bits out, which is also a plus. The gel itself is pretty thick and lubricated. I am used to using oils and butters as part of my natural hair routine, so the greasy texture did not really turn me off. The smell however is really pungent. I only used it every two days. I just could not bear to use it on a daily basis.

After five odd weeks I checked my hair and it grew about half an inch, which is pretty normal growth for me. I enjoyed the experiment, but I probably won’t continue to use it.
4C Hair Texture, Sara Dembele, The Aficionado
Girl let me tell you. I ab-so-lu-te-ly loved the Virgin Hair Fertilizer. After wearing wigs for years, my edges became non-existent. I have tried everything under the sun to grow them back and I can say Virgin Hair Fertilizer did the trick. After using the product for several weeks, I could clearly see that my edges started becoming thicker. I use it at night before I go to bed. I massage the ointment on my edges and put a headband over it. It does smell strong initially, but I love peppermint so I don’t mind it so much lol. It gives me a clean and hygienic feeling. Also by morning the smell has completely faded, so you don’t have to worry so much about it.

I am currently transitioning and the fact that I don’t have edges doesn’t make it all that great. I will continue to use the Virgin Hair Fertilizer to grow my edges back, while I am getting used to wearing my hair naturally.
Box Braids Protective Style, Rianna Muriuki, The Explorer
I have a pretty sensitive scalp, so I am pretty weary about introducing new hair care products to my regimen. Having said that, I was curious about Virgin Hair Fertilizer and gladly obliged to be part of this experiment. I am currently wearing box braids, which is a great protective style to grow your hair out. I wanted to give it an extra push by applying this cream.
I applied the Virgin Hair Fertilizer every morning at my roots. I did not massage it in, since this would mess up my braids. I basically just used it to smooth any loose hairs as you would normally do with a hair pomade.
What I can say is that this product is really great for your scalp. My scalp got pulled heavily during braiding and it healed my scalp nicely and quickly. I also noticed that the cream darkens your hair a bit. My roots were noticeably darker.
I took my braids out after a month or so, but unfortunately I did not notice any growth womp womp womp.

3C Hair Texture, Monica de Winter, The Experimenter
I have tested a lot of things to grow my natural hair out. I have tried biotin, hair vitamins, rice water and plenty of homemade concoctions. I have seen the Virgin Hair Fertilizer frequent my social feeds and I was ready to jump on the bandwagon.
I have 3c curls, high porosity hair that is quite thin and fragile. I have been natural for about 3 years now and my hair just does not grow, which is quite frustrating. I know you have to be patient and all, but I am ready to see some results.
I have 3c curls, low porosity hair that is quite thin and fragile. I have been natural for about 3 years now and my hair just does not grow, which is quite frustrating.
Five weeks long, I used the Virgin Fertilizer day and night on my scalp. I put the grease on my roots and massaged it in for one minute to really give the product the chance to do what it does. The smell is well…very present, when you use it. My boyfriend wasn’t a fan, but he had to chuck it up for the greater good.
The texture reminds me of vaseline with a mild petroleum waft. Since I have high porosity hair, it luckily did not sit on top of my hair too long. You feel a slight tingling in the beginning, but nothing unbearable.
I was pretty excited after the 5 weeks to finally check the length of my hair, but again I came up short. It is a nice little cream, but it did not do anything for my hair growth.
